Nov7Vol3no11IACP and BofA Launch ID Crime Toolkits The IACP and the Bank of America have developed and made available on the web three publications to assist in preventing and recovering from identity theft crimes. Two of the publications are designed for distribution to the public: the ID Crime Prevention Toolkit, and the ID Crime Recovery Toolkit. A third publication, Police Chief's Identity Crime Toolkit, is designed for use by local law enforcement agencies to assess, organize and build departmental capacity and effectiveness in addressing identity crime, including suggested resources. All are available at www.IDSafety.org.

Nov7Vol3no11This month, the Senate passed the FY2008 Senate Commerce- Justice-Science Appropriations bill which, among other things, provides enhanced funding for the COPS, RISS and Pegasus programs which support local law enforcement in fighting crime. Thanks to bi-partisan leadership provided by Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL), Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS), and Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT), the Senate bill included FY2008 funding for expansion of the Pegasus Program.

Nov7Vol3no11During the National Sheriffs’ Association Mid-Winter Meeting held in Washington, DC earlier this month, the Pegasus Advisory Board met. Advisory Board Members present included Sheriff Tommy Ferrell, Chairman; NSA President Ted Kamatchus, Sheriff Marshall County, IA; NSA 1st Vice President Craig Webre, Sheriff, Lafourche Parish, LA; NSA 3rd Vice President David Goad, Sheriff, Allegany County, MD; and NSA Board Member Larry Amerson, Sheriff, Calhoun County, AL NSA guests present were: NSA Board Member David Huffman, Sheriff, Catawba County, NC; Former NSA President Dan Smith, Sheriff, Bell County, TX; NSA Board Member Paul Fitzgerald, Sheriff, Story County, IA; Mr. Fred Wilson, NSA/Training; and Ms. Ann Yom, NSA/Legislative Affairs (representing NSA Executive Director Aaron Kennard). -Pegasus System Update: More than 700 agencies and offices in 34 states currently participate in the Pegasus Program, either by contributing data, accessing data, or both. Currently, 268 agencies have access to Pegasus, 544 agencies contribute data, and the system now has 16.4 million records not available through Federal systems, an increase of 5.3 million records during 2006.
